How the Last 16 looks in the 2024 UK Championship draw

Seven of the top 16 seeds have already exited the 2024 UK Championship draw after suffering early losses at the Barbican Centre in York.

The first-round casualties include reigning champion Ronnie O’Sullivan plus fellow former winners Mark Selby and Mark Williams.

The standard so far in the tournament has not been particularly high with several players already outspoken on what they believe are bad table conditions.

Four more victories are required to land the £250,000 top prize and the campaign’s opening Triple Crown title.

Let’s take a look at the eight second-round fixtures in the 2024 UK Championship draw.

Barry Hawkins vs David Gilbert

Barry Hawkins produced a strong finish to win the last four frames and dispatch of record eight-time champion Ronnie O’Sullivan in round one.

The Hawk next faces fellow Englishman David Gilbert, who secured a similar 6-4 triumph over the in-form Xiao Guodong.

Hawkins boasts a stronger head-to-head record from their prior battles with one another, although a lot of the duo’s encounters have taken place in the Championship League.

Shaun Murphy vs Ding Junhui

Three-time champion Ding Junhui faces 2008 winner Shaun Murphy in what is one of the ties of the second round.

Both players needed deciding frames to reach this point in the competition, recording tight triumphs against Robert Milkins and Zhao Xintong respectively.

Ding has a strong record in York and has reached three out of the last five finals, but the recent International Championship winner has often struggled against Murphy in the past.

Jack Lisowski vs Ali Carter

Jack Lisowski produced one of the finest displays of his career to come from behind and deny Mark Selby a spot in the last 16.

The 33 year-old remains arguably the best player on the circuit who has never won a ranking title, with consistency still representing his major weakness.

That area of his game will be tested again when he faces Ali Carter, with the pair sharing an even 5-5 record from their prior showdowns against one another.

Wu Yize vs Mark Allen

Mark Allen cut a disconsolate figure despite his victory over Jackson Page in the first round, with the 2022 champion openly disgusted by his standard.

The Pistol began the season as the world number one but is slipping down the provisional list, while opponent Wu Yize is moving in the opposite direction.

English Open finalist Wu’s stock is constantly rising, and the 21 year-old already boasts a provisional end-of-season ranking inside the world’s top 25.

Judd Trump vs John Higgins

Judd Trump maintained his hopes of landing a first UK crown since 2011 by clawing his way back from 3-1 down to oust old rival Neil Robertson.

The world number one encounters John Higgins in the second round of the 2024 UK Championship draw, the legendary Scot a comprehensive 6-0 winner over He Guoqiang.

Trump and Higgins have shared so many high-profile battles over the years – including Crucible finals – and their head-to-head stats are quite even, although the former has dominated in recent times.

Zhang Anda vs Stuart Bingham

While a lot of players were bemoaning the table conditions at the Barbican Centre, Zhang Anda was compiling a third career 147 break.

Another maximum for the Chinese cueist at one of the Triple Crown events this season will earn him a tidy £147,000 bonus.

Zhang encounters Stuart Bingham next, the latter winning the last four frames against Mark Williams to sustain his chances of completing the career Triple Crown.

Jak Jones vs Michael Holt

Jak Jones heaped further misery on Luca Brecel, taking the concluding three frames to deny the Belgian Bullet in a deciding frame.

It was much more comfortable for Michael Holt, who continued his remarkable resurgence from the first qualifying round by thumping Gary Wilson 6-1.

Jones and Holt have faced each other only twice before on the main tour, winning one clash apiece.

Chris Wakelin vs Kyren Wilson

Kyren Wilson wasn’t at his best but didn’t need to be as he took advantage of an abject performance from Stephen Maguire.

The world champion will surely face a sterner test in Chris Wakelin if he’s to reach the quarter-finals for the fourth time.

Wakelin represents probably the most improved player on the circuit over the course of the last two years, reflected by his deserved membership among the top 16.

  1. Allen may be less hard on himself as so many others have struggled since his match on Sunday afternoon.

Ten English players remain in the draw. Three from China and one each from the other Home Nations.

Seven players left have won a Triple Crown event. Five past UK Champions still involved: Allen, Higgins, Trump, Ding and Murphy.

Jak Jones, Jack Lisowski and Wu Yize the only players left that have not won a ranking event.

  2. Barry Hawkins win means Neil Robertson will miss the Masters for the first time since 2018.

The reclothing of the table on Tuesday night clearly played a huge part in the markedly improved standard on day five. Allen was immense on the last four against Wu. Equally, Ding and Murphy conjured up a world class quartet of frames to finish their last 16 match.
