We’ve lost two more snooker figures since Christmas: Silvino Francisco and Alan Hughes.
The former is the only African player to win a ranking event. He best Kirk Stevens 12-9 to win the 1985 British Open. This remains the fifth most watched game in UK television history. He spent four seasons in the top 16, peaking at 10. He also won the South African Professional title and played in a Rest of the World team which finished runners-up in the 1989 World Cup.
Alan Hughes was the gold standard for sporting comperes. Many of today’s nicknames were introduced by Hughes, a former professional footballer, such as The Rocket, Sheriff of Pottingham, Wizard of Wishaw, Darling of Dublin and Angles. He also extended Jimmy White’s nickname by referring to him as the Whirlwind of London Town. His wordplay was concise and literate.

I got 30 out of 35. I was a little surprised Trump lost out to Wilson for centuries made in 2024.
