Judd Trump breaks snooker prize money record

Judd Trump beat Ding Junhui to reach the semi-finals of the 2025 Masters on Friday, and in doing so he set a new snooker prize money record.

The Englishman produced a near-flawless display from 3-1 behind, winning the last five frames on the spin and leaving his opponent pointless across the concluding three.

The turning point occurred in the sixth frame when Ding, who had performed excellently until then, missed a routine red with the rest when primed to move 4-2 in front.

Trump took advantage to restore parity and duly raced away to glory by making breaks of 125, 62, and 75 in the following frames.

The 35 year-old is guaranteed a payday worth £75,000 for reaching the semi-finals of the Masters for the seventh time in his career.

That sum takes his overall tally for the 2024/25 snooker season to a whopping £1,295,200 – breaking the previous record set for prize money in a single campaign.

Ronnie O’Sullivan had set a new target of £1,265,500 last term with a five-trophy haul that included glories at the Masters and the UK Championship.

But Trump has already eclipsed that after a consistent campaign in which he has constantly featured at the business end of tournaments.

The world number one triumphed at the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters that carried a champion’s cheque worth half a million pounds.

Other rich rewards were claimed for his victories in the UK Championship and the Shanghai Masters, while Trump was a finalist at both the Xi’an Grand Prix and the Northern Ireland Open.

Still only in January and with several big-money events to follow in the coming months, he might even have his sights set on surpassing the £2 million milestone.

Trump, of course, could immediately add to his significant earnings haul this weekend if he were to proceed to capture a third Masters crown.

The 2019 and 2023 champion would increase his total by a further £275,000 if he were to etch his name onto the Paul Hunter Trophy again – with £350,000 on offer for the 2025 winner.

Trump is already guaranteed to feature in the World Grand Prix, the Players Championship, and the Tour Championship in the second half of this season.

All three events boast top prizes of at least £150,000, while the German Masters and the World Open are on the horizon as well.

Trump has opted to skip this year’s Welsh Open and doesn’t feature in the draw for Llandudno that was announced recently.

At the end of the 2024/25 campaign, though, Trump will obviously be one of the favourites for the World Snooker Championship with £500,000 again up for grabs in Sheffield.

In the form that he is in at present, you wouldn’t bet against the snooker star extending his record prize money tally to dizzying heights.

“It’s heading that way [as the greatest season of my career],” Judd Trump told the World Snooker Tour.

“It’s still a little way away for me. I think to win six events in a season for me was pretty special.”

“I’d think I’d probably have to get somewhere close to that.

“But the manner and the magnitude of the finals in the tournaments that I’ve done it in makes it a little bit more special, and the standard I’ve been able to produce also.”

Judd Trump will encounter either Kyren Wilson or Luca Brecel in the semi-finals of the 2025 Masters on Saturday.

  1. The ‘Grand Slam’ bid has been mentioned on the BBC. Shabnam Younus-Jewell mentioned it when interviewing Judd Trump.

A wonderful day of quarter-final action. We needed the late drama in the last match to supplement fabulous quality in much of the previous three games that didn’t go particularly close.

Cash means ranking points and if he wins the world championship at the end of the season he might be completely out of sight of all the rest! A professional tour of 120 odd players….and a ‘one man race’ “Trump tour” in an altogether different league.
