Judd Trump wins top World Snooker Tour award

Judd Trump capped a strong 2024/25 season by collecting the World Snooker Tour Player of the Year award.

The Englishman was given the accolade for the fourth time in his career on the back of a campaign where he earned a record sum of prize money.

Trump banked a whopping £1,680,600 throughout a term during which he was a regular presence at the business end of tournaments.

The 35 year-old began his season with victory in the prestigious Shanghai Masters invitational, where he beat Shaun Murphy in the final.

A dramatic 10-9 triumph over Mark Williams in the final of the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters soon followed, with his last-gasp match-clinching clearance earning him the Magic Moment of the Year award as well.

Beating the Welshman on the final black in the deciding frame saw Trump pocket a record-equalling champion’s cheque worth £500,000.

Trump later added to his Triple Crown haul with success at the UK Championship in York, edging Barry Hawkins 10-8 in a memorable title-deciding battle.

Silverware became more difficult to obtain after the turn of the year, but his overall consistency was reflected in the fact that he failed to reach at least the quarter-finals in only three out of 19 events he participated in.

Trump ended the season with a disappointing exit at the semi-final stage of the World Snooker Championship, losing 17-14 to Williams at the Crucible.

But his 14 tons in Sheffield brought his overall tally to the season to 107, a record number that saw him collect the £100,000 century of century breaks bonus.

Trump also finished the term as the runaway world number one with a lead of almost £700,000 to Kyren Wilson in second and of over £1 million to Williams in third.

The Bristol potter was additionally awarded the Fans Player of the Year award, voted for by supporters in the UK and China.

In his season as the reigning world champion, the Kettering cueist won four ranking titles and firmly established himself in the number two position from the world rankings list.

    • I voted for Trump in the Journalists’ award. I understand why people chose Wilson, but I would say all three of Trump’s victories were bigger than any of Wilson’s four. He was generally in the business end of events more often too, and there is the century of centuries milestone to consider as well.

Totally agree that Jackson Page should have got Magic Moment. That’s scandalous.

That’s a lot of different awards! Wilson must have been in contention for player of the season until he fell apart on day 1 of the worlds. Trump really was the outstanding candidate after that. A worthy winner. Zhao Xingtong winning 9 matches and being the first amateur and first Chinese professional world champion looks like a slam dunk award for best performance too. Even if he actually had little to beat at the tournament proper, which takes a bit of the shine off sadly, and through no fault of his own. I think he’d have played a higher level if he’d been pushed hard by anyone. The ‘original Jimmy White’ might be very envious of how the seas parted for the mercurial prodigy, when they never quite would for him, as he played his best decade of snooker across the peaks of Davis and Hendry.
Bai Yulu will need a big year next season: her run at the UK qualifiers came just after she played Mark Williams at the champion of champions where she seemed to grow in self confidence even as he defeated her. If she can find that extra bit of match confidence again it will be interesting. Her winning three qualifying matches was highly impressive.
