Rising star Chang Bingyu lit up the Shenzhen Open qualifiers with an excellent 147 break during his 5-0 defeat of Chatchapong Nasa on Tuesday.
The 23 year-old has been one to watch since returning to the main tour at the beginning of last season.
Contemporaries Zhao Xintong and Wu Yize have represented the Chinese competitors who have accepted the limelight the most across the last couple of years.
But Chang looks destined to join them at the highest echelons of the game, with his stock rapidly moving in an upward trajectory.
Chang, last season’s Scottish Open runner-up, reached the final round of the Shenzhen Open qualifiers with a devastating display of heavy scoring.
Not only did he compile his third career maximum break in the fourth frame, but he also tallied contributions of 135, 134, 109, and 83 – leaving his opponent with just 24 points scored.
The relentless showing evoked memories of his victory over Shaun Murphy in last season’s Welsh Open, where he also compiled four century breaks in a best-of-seven affair and ended the outing with a perfect 100% pot success rate.
Chang is already into the world’s top 50 but has no points to defend this season, meaning he could potentially challenge for a spot in the top 16 by the end of the campaign.
Elsewhere, there were victories for Chang’s countrymen He Guoqiang, Xu Si, Huang Jiahao, Luo Zetao, and Lan Yuhao.
The latter defied a three-ton performance from Noppon Saengkham to edge the Thai in a dramatic 5-4 thriller.
In an all-Welsh clash, Jackson Page denied the in-form Dylan Emery with a 5-3 scoreline, while Anthony McGill pipped Jordan Brown in a decider.
Antoni Kowalski, who memorably safeguarded his tour card by qualifying for the World Snooker Championship in April, beat Daniel Wells.
Ricky Walden, Matthew Selt, Oliver Lines, Liam Highfield, and David Grace were the others to make it through to the round of 64.
With the games involving the top 16 players held over to the venue stages in Shenzhen, only half of the matches in the upcoming round will be played on Wednesday.
There are some intriguing ties, though, with Luca Brecel in action against Pang Junxu and McGill facing recent Championship League Snooker winner Jak Jones.
Chang, meanwhile, will attempt to secure qualification for one of his home tournaments against Elliot Slessor.
